Most rooms are under-lit, mis-scaled, or stuck on a single overhead. The fix isn't a brighter bulb — it's planning ambient, task, and accent layers that work together. Here's what each does, and what to shop for.
01 — Ambient
The overall light level
Usually a chandelier, pendant, flush mount, or recessed cans. Sets the room's brightness floor — without it, every other light reads as a spotlight on darkness.

Frequently asked questions
What size chandelier do I need over a dining table?
A reliable rule: chandelier diameter (inches) ≈ dining table width (inches) minus 12. So a 48-inch wide table takes a 30–36-inch chandelier. Hang it 30–34 inches above the tabletop. Stop in the showroom and we will size it with you.
What lighting brands does Marais Home carry?
We carry Hudson Valley Lighting, Four Hands, Abigail Ahern, Arteriors, Gabby, Mitzi, and Troy Lighting for fixtures, plus a curated mix of designer table and floor lamps. New brands rotate through the showroom regularly.
Can you help me plan lighting for a whole room or renovation?
Yes. Our design services include lighting plans — fixture selection, scale, dimming, and layering. Available as a single-room consult or as part of a full-home design package.
Are your fixtures dimmable?
Most are. We will confirm dimming compatibility (LED driver vs. incandescent dimmer) when you are choosing.
Do you carry outdoor and wet-rated lighting?
We can source outdoor and damp/wet-rated fixtures from our lighting partners on request. Ask in the showroom or on a consultation call.
