Decor at Marais Home
The Decor Edit

Decor, the way a designer layers a room.

Art, mirrors, vessels, books, and decorative objects — curated for texture and patina over polish, and chosen the way we’d specify them on a real client project.

Decor 101

Three rules for layering a room.

Decor reads as styling, but it’s mostly composition — scale, repetition, and breathing room. A few rules we use on every project.

Vary the silhouette
01 — Heights

Vary the silhouette

A grouping of three works because the heights step. Same heights look like a lineup. Tall, medium, short — every shelf, every console.

Mix glass, ceramic, metal, wood
02 — Materials

Mix glass, ceramic, metal, wood

One material everywhere reads cheap, even if each piece is expensive. Repetition of one material per category is the move — never of one material across all of them.

One big thing first
03 — Anchor

One big thing first

A large mirror or piece of art lets the smaller decor read as supporting cast. Anchor the wall, then layer the surface in front.

Frequently asked questions

How high should I hang art?
Center the artwork at 57 to 60 inches from the floor — that is gallery height, and it works in most rooms. Above a sofa or console, leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
What size mirror do I need over a console?
Aim for a mirror that is about two-thirds the width of the console below it. Width matters more than height — a too-narrow mirror looks marooned. Bring us the console dimensions and we will size it together.
Do you sell original art?
We carry a mix of framed prints, limited editions, and one-of-a-kind works from artists we follow. The original-art selection rotates regularly — visit the showroom to see what is in.
How do I style a coffee table without it looking cluttered?
A reliable formula: one stack of books (3 to 5 max), one sculptural object on top of the stack, one tray with a small vessel and a candle, and one taller piece to vary the height. Less than that feels sparse; more feels busy.
Where is Marais Home located?
882 E High Street, in Lexington's Chevy Chase neighborhood.
