Tabletop 101

Skip the set. Build a wardrobe.

The mistake most people make with tabletop is buying a complete set. Sets match the day they arrive and look stale forever after. Build a layered mix instead — pieces that play together but aren’t identical.

One neutral stoneware
01 — Everyday

One neutral stoneware

Hand-thrown ceramics or stoneware in a single quiet color. The plate that goes in the dishwasher every night and never reads as boring.

One nicer ceramic
02 — Entertaining

One nicer ceramic

A second plate or shallow bowl in a different finish or shape — handmade, slightly more involved. The one that comes out for company without you needing a "good china" cabinet.

Glass and linen
03 — Layering

Glass and linen

Mixed glassware in two or three shapes (water, wine, lowball), real linen napkins, and a few oil and salt vessels you’d leave on the counter. Repeat across both modes.

A note on choosing
“A good tabletop wardrobe looks unstaged because it is — every piece earns its spot in everyday use, not just on Instagram.”

Buying Guide

Frequently asked questions

Are your ceramics dishwasher safe?
Most are, but we recommend hand-washing hand-thrown and unglazed pieces to keep the finish intact. Care info is on each product page; ask in the showroom if you are not sure.
Do you sell complete dinnerware sets?
We do not push sets — we curate so individual pieces mix. Buy one neutral plate, one nicer plate, two or three glasses, and linen napkins, and you have a tabletop that works for everyday and dinner parties.
Can I build a wedding registry with Marais Home?
Yes. We help clients build registries and hosting kits in person — bring a list and we will edit with you, or book a consultation.
Do you carry kitchen knives?
Yes — we carry a small, vetted selection of chef's knives and prep tools. The knife edit rotates; visit the showroom to see what is in.
Where is Marais Home located?
882 E High Street, in Lexington's Chevy Chase neighborhood.
